He has led facade design efforts for the award-winning Brown University Engineering Research Center (ERC), creating an innovative envelope that focused on maximizing daylight and views for all occupants. The facade design typified the multidisciplinary, integrated approach to the ERC, incorporating feedback from all levels of the design team, from the Principals Group to fabricators and installers executing the work.

Eli’s previous experience includes a master plan for a new Patient Pavilion for the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, the planning for Henley Hall at UC Santa Barbara, and serving as Project Architect for The Tidelands, a resilient and affordable urban housing complex that accommodates over 700 medical students at the University of San Francisco, California. Recently, Eli has been working on several overseas projects for the U.S. Department of State, including serving as Project Architect for the new U.S. Consulate in Curaçao.

Eli earned a Master of Architecture from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Pennsylvania.

Christopher Connock’s work leverages a deep understanding of building design and computation toward effective, agile, and imaginative practices.

As Principal and Design Computation Director at KieranTimberlake, Christopher explores topics such as generative and parametric design, application development, data visualization, immersive environments, and digital fabrication. He has applied this knowledge across a variety of projects, including the John A. Paulson Center, a sustainable multi-use building for New York University, and OpenHome, a customizable, prefabricated, and sustainable residence designed to perform at Passive House levels. Beyond the built environment, Christopher has developed an array of architectural software including Pointelist™, a wireless sensor network, Tally®, a Life Cycle Assessment plugin for Revit, and Roast™, a customizable comfort survey app.

Christopher has co-taught graduate studios at the University of Pennsylvania and led workshops at the Georgia Institute of Technology and Woodbury University. He has lectured at Harvard University, UC Berkeley, Carnegie Mellon University, and Woodbury University. In addition to sitting on juries at Yale University and the University of Pennsylvania, Christopher has presented at multiple practice-based forums, most recently at the American Institute of Architects and Boston Society of Architects. He earned a Master of Architecture from Yale University and a Bachelor of Science in Architecture from the University of Virginia.

Andrew Cronin sees project constraints as unique opportunities for innovative design.

In over 10 years as an architect, Andrew has focused on renovation projects including the Morse and Ezra Stiles Colleges at Yale University and Lowell House at Harvard University, for which he is currently the Principal in Charge. He also served as the Project Architect for the Consortium for Building Energy Innovation, a retrofit of a former recreation facility at the Philadelphia Navy Yard. Andrew was also the Project Architect for High Horse Ranch, a sustainable private home in rural Northern California, and Congregation Rodeph Shalom, a renovation and addition that expanded a historic Philadelphia synagogue to accommodate its growing congregation.

Andrew excels at digital design, prototyping, and systems integration and brings his expertise in digital design to the firm within KieranTimberlake’s BIM Practices Group and Knowledge Community. He is also a jury critic and adjunct faculty member at the Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts and Design at Drexel University.

Mark Davis brings design sophistication and analytical prowess to complex challenges.

With over fifteen years of architectural experience, Mark brings an expertise in project leadership, innovative problem-solving, and energy efficient building design to each of his projects. Currently, he is Principal In Charge for the new US Consulate in Curaçao for the US Department of State. Recently, Mark served as the Principal in Charge for Henley Hall, a new high-performing and energy efficient laboratory building at the University of California, Santa Barbara, as well as the Tidelands, a 590-unit affordable housing complex for medical residents and trainees at the University of California, San Francisco. He has also served as the Associate in Charge for the recently completed Engineering Research Center at Brown University, a cutting edge laboratory facility that was designed and built using an Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) process.

Prior to his work at Brown, Mark contributed to the building envelope design at both Rice University’s Brockman Hall for Physics and the US Embassy in London. He also worked on the Belles Street Townhomes in San Francisco, a multi-family development in San Francisco’s historic Presidio Heights neighborhood, and was a member the design team for the Multifaith Center and Houghton Memorial Chapel at Wellesley College. Having led two IPD projects, Mark now lectures on how colleges and universities can effectively use this delivery method on their campus projects, as well as on high-performance laboratory design.

Huwayda plays a key role in advancing KieranTimberlake’s leadership in design, research, and planning.

As the firm’s Director of Business Strategy and Communications, she leads the development of KieranTimberlake’s portfolio, sets strategic goals, fosters partnerships, and shapes the firm’s messaging.

With a strong academic and professional background in marketing, political science, and architecture, Huwayda serves as a bridge between visual designers and storytellers, effectively communicating the core ideas and values behind the built environment.

She directs the marketing, business development, and promotion of both physical and conceptual projects, as well as innovative research and digital tools. In addition, Huwayda contributes to the firm’s strategic positioning, project selection, and thought leadership initiatives.

Originally from the suburbs of Philadelphia, Huwayda earned her bachelor’s degree from the Fox School of Business at Temple University. She later completed her Master of Architecture at UCLA’s AUD in 2014. After more than a decade in Los Angeles, she returned to Philadelphia in 2021. Huwayda is also a board member of the Fleisher Art Memorial, one of the country’s oldest nonprofit community art schools.

David Feaster, AIA, LEED AP, excels at bringing clients, stakeholders, consultants, and contractors together to fulfill project goals. As a DBIA member, he brings an ethos rooted in collaboration and empathy to all projects, regardless of delivery method.

He is currently the Principal-in-Charge of a new, design-build engineering facility for the University of Washington and is co-leading a large student housing project at the University of California, Santa Cruz campus. David has also recently helped to steward the Weitzman Hall project through its construction phase. He previously served as Principal-in-Charge for the 2,000+ bed North Campus Housing community at the University of Washington. David has balanced rigorous consultant coordination and detailed systems integration for a range of other projects, including the award-winning Dunster House at Harvard University, the first of six historic River Houses renovated by KieranTimberlake, which was recognized for its successful integration of accessibility and historic preservation.

David earned his Bachelor of Architecture degree from Virginia Tech and supports community volunteering time as a youth sports coach.

Jazz brings a strong collaborative approach to deliver design solutions with ambitious technological and sustainability goals.

Committed to collaboration with clients, users, and design partners, Jazz has a keen eye for detail and balancing client needs. She served as a project architect for Washington University in St. Louis’ East End Transformation. The project includes several major components, including a new facility for the art and architecture school, an expansion of the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum, two new multi-use buildings, and an underground parking garage.

Recently, she worked on developing a residential master plan for Colby College, creating a vibrant and distinct living-learning community. Jazz co-chairs the AIA Philadelphia chapter of Women in Architecture where she leads programming that cultivates the development and leadership of women design professionals. She earned a Master of Architecture from the University of Nebraska and a Bachelor of Science in Interior Architecture at the University of Wisconsin–Madison.

Laurent Hedquist explores the deep interaction between users and the built environment on every project type, from planning to design.

In his architectural practice, Laurent has developed a thorough understanding of campus planning and project delivery, especially in synthesizing the perspectives and priorities of large client groups to deliver plans and buildings that work for everyone. He has applied this knowledge across all phases of project delivery, from surveying building users to producing thorough construction documents for complex projects, on such projects as the US Embassy in London and Rice University’s Integrated Campus Plan, a master plan that can anticipate and adjust to an unpredictable future. Recently, Laurent continued his relationship with Rice University as the Principal in Charge of the North Central Research Corridor Precinct Study and is currently the Project Manager of the Sackett Building Renovation and Additions at The Pennsylvania State University, revitalizing an iconic building at the campus core.

Laurent’s other projects include the Student Innovation Center at Iowa State, a workshop for experimentation and interdisciplinary design, and the Engineering Research Center at Brown University, a cutting-edge laboratory facility designed and built using an Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) process. He has expertly synthesized the perspectives and expectations of large client groups to deliver cohesive, deliberate, and informative planning documents for the University of Chicago, the School of Information and Library Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and Futuris, a new university campus in Morocco.

As part of his practice, Laurent has been a visiting critic for design juries at Penn State, Drexel University, and Philadelphia University.

Richard Hodge brings a deep understanding of the means and methods of construction to the design process.

In his role as technical reviewer for KieranTimberlake projects in all phases of development, Richard demonstrates his expertise in construction methodologies. From consultant coordination through delivery, he ensures that each project meets the firm’s standards for technical excellence, clarity, and consistency.

Richard is currently wrapping up construction of the New Science Building at the University of Toronto Mississauga. Recent projects include the Foreign Affairs Security Training Center (FASTC), a hard-skills training facility for the U.S. Department of State, and the U.S. Embassy in London. In addition to his technical expertise, Richard has contributed designs for numerous projects, including the Keohane Quadrangle at Duke University, the Charles David Keeling Apartments at the University of California, San Diego, and the Stewart Middle School at Sidwell Friends in Washington, D.C. He has worked extensively at Yale University on the comprehensive renovation of Davenport College and the School of Forestry and Environmental Studies’ Sage Bowers Hall. His work with adaptive reuse and renovation—which includes survey, documentation, planning, design, demolition, and rehabilitation—has enabled a deep understanding of how buildings change over time.

Richard also manages KieranTimberlake’s information systems, a role that involves researching, testing, and incorporating new digital tools into practice.

Throughout his career, Steven has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to advancing the practice of architecture through a focus on precision, efficiency, and innovation.

As Technical Director at KieranTimberlake, Steven Johns is responsible for leading the firm’s quality assurance and quality control processes, ensuring that concepts are executed with precision, efficiency, and beauty. His deep expertise bridges the gap between architectural vision and real-world implementation, providing the technical guidance necessary to tackle complex, large-scale projects. Through his 28-year tenure at KieranTimberlake, he has become a cornerstone of the firm’s technical team, elevating and helping to shape the firm’s work.

Steven has been integral to the success of many high-profile projects, including Cellophane House™ one of the firm’s most iconic and experimental prefabricated projects, designed for the MoMA exhibition Home Delivery: Fabricating the Modern Dwelling. He was part of the team that designed and built, a state-of-the-art facility for research and teaching at Rice University Brockman Hall for Physics. Most notably, he provided critical oversight of the technical aspects of the U.S. Embassy in London design, a rigorous and ambitious project for the U.S. Department of State.

Stephen Kieran’s work is the result of a thorough examination of the craft of architecture at all scales.

From early adoption of building information modeling and environmental analysis tools, to close collaboration with fabricators and engagement with materials scientists, Steve shifts expectations of the role of architect. Examples include Loblolly House, an off-site fabricated home in the Chesapeake Bay; SmartWrap™, a mass-customizable building envelope exhibited at the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum; Cellophane House™, a fully recyclable, energy-gathering dwelling exhibited at The Museum of Modern Art in New York; and the Embassy of the United States in London, which employs strategies to significantly reduce energy consumption and sets an agenda to achieve carbon neutrality.

More recent projects include a renovation and addition to arts and music facilities at Wellesley College, House Renewal projects at Harvard University, a new School of Engineering at Brown University, and three new student life buildings on the University of Washington’s North Campus.

Under his guidance, the firm has received over 260 design citations, including the AIA Firm Award in 2008 and the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Award in 2010. Steve and co-founder James Timberlake were the inaugural recipients of the Benjamin Latrobe Fellowship for architectural design research from the AIA College of Fellows in 2001. Richard collaborates across disciplines to achieve the integration and consensus needed to address some of architecture’s most urgent issues.

Since joining KieranTimberlake over 35 years ago, Richard has worked to move architecture forward through the design of projects that are deeply rooted to place and culture. He has collaborated with national and regional cultural, civic, government, and educational institutions on internationally award-winning projects that connect and inspire people, build community, and address the climate crisis.

Richard has led acclaimed higher education projects at New York University, Washington University in St. Louis, and the University of Pennsylvania, among others. His extensive experience in performing arts design includes the recently completed John A. Paulson Center at NYU, two regional theater companies in Philadelphia, comprehensive master plans and subsequent renovations for the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia. Richard has led all our work for the U.S. Department of State, including the new U.S. Embassy in London. Current projects include the U.S. Embassy to the Kingdom of Belgium and U.S. Mission to the European Union and the U.S. Consulate in Curaçao.

He is a passionate advocate for architectural innovation and has frequently spoken on this topic before national audiences, asking what is possible in architecture through exploration of culture, sustainability, tectonics, design processes, and construction methodologies.

In addition to his speaking engagements, Richard frequently serves on design award juries, including the recent World Architecture Festival in Singapore. As a former chair of the AIA Architecture Awards, Richard led the jury to recognize projects of impactful design that foster engagement and restore the environment. Richard is passionate about serving local communities through board positions at several nonprofit organizations, including AIA Philadelphia, the Northern Liberties Business Improvement District, and the Arden Theatre Company, a leading regional theater in Philadelphia.

Jon McCandlish, AIA is a Principal and Managing Director of KieranTimberlake, where he leads complex architectural and planning projects focused on innovation, performance, and thoughtful urban and campus design.

Over two decades, Jon has realized aspirational designs for cultural, institutional, civic, and residential projects including the US Embassy in London, the award-winning Pound Ridge House, New York University’s John A. Paulson Center, UC Santa Barbara’s Henley Hall, Penn’s Landing Park, and a new hub for life sciences research at 2300 Market Street in Philadelphia. He has led transformational master plans for Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, the Philadelphia Zoo, The Rosenbach Museum & Library, and the University of Hawai’i at Manoa. Brendan Miller’s attention to detail fosters thoughtful resolutions to design and technical challenges.

Leveraging his breadth of experience on a variety of building scales, typologies, and construction methodologies, Brendan crafts thoughtful design solutions for each of his projects. He approaches design and technical challenges with a critical eye and rigorous attention to detail.

During his tenure at KieranTimberlake, Brendan has been a key figure in the design of various projects, including the UC Santa Barbara’s Portola Dining Commons and Wellesley College’s Pendleton West Addition and Renovation. He served as the Project Architect for Harvard University’s Lowell House, a 220,000 sf renovation that transformed underutilized rooms into active student amenity spaces, while still preserving the buildings’ historic character and architecture. Brendan is currently the Project Architect for Carnegie Mellon University’s Scaife Hall, a new home for the Department of Mechanical Engineering with technology-rich labs, flexible classrooms, and spaces that promote collaboration.

He supports KieranTimberlake’s Building Information Modeling (BIM) Practices group, working to develop and maintain standards, guidelines, and best practices across the firm. Brendan earned a Bachelor of Architecture from Philadelphia University, where he has also taught and served on several juries.

Johann Mordhorst values the role that systems and structure play in defining architecture that elevates people, place, and materials.

Since joining KieranTimberlake in 2005, Johann has worked on a broad range of project types and scales, including the Yale University Sculpture Building and School of Art Gallery, the first LEED Platinum building in the state of Connecticut, and High Horse Ranch, an off-site fabricated private residence in Northern California.

Johann led the design team for the Foreign Affairs Security Training Center (FASTC), a hard-skills training facility for U.S. Department of State personnel and members of the foreign affairs community on 1,350 acres in Virginia, as well as the renovation and addition to the historic Folger Shakespeare Library, a national landmark building designed by noted architect Paul Cret in Washington, D.C. He is currently working on the design of the U.S. Embassy in Belgium and the U.S. Mission to the European Union.

Outside of the office, Johann has been a guest critic and presenter at Philadelphia University, Penn State, Virginia Tech, and his alma mater, the University of Pennsylvania. While working toward his Masters, he served as a teaching assistant for Stephen Kieran and James Timberlake’s design-research studio and contributor to Alluvium, a book highlighting the studio’s seven years in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Tim embraces the inherent complexity of design problems to unearth the potential of each detail, building, and place.

With over 20 years of experience, Tim has led the design and delivery of several major university projects at KieranTimberlake. Most recently, he served as the Principal-in-Charge of the 330,000 sf MIT Graduate Housing project, as well as for a renovation and addition to Pendleton Hall, an arts and music facility at Wellesley College. Prior to this, Tim served as the Project Architect for Harvard University’s historic residential renovation of Stone Hall that set a sustainable paradigm for the whole Harvard Harvard River House Renewal initiative and informed future work of the university’s House Renewal program.

Tim’s expertise lies in his technical coordination and ability to synthesize multiple disciplines and perspectives. The act of making, including building his own design work, has been an essential part of his career, and he has brought this skillset to each of his projects. In addition to his practice, Tim has taught design studios and building technology courses at Temple University and has served on juries at the University of Pennsylvania, Temple University, Drexel University, and Philadelphia University.

Marilia Rodrigues, AIA is a Principal and Managing Director of KieranTimberlake, where she leads large teams of diverse stakeholders on award-winning projects with clear communication and proactive management.

For over 20 years, Marilia has led major arts, academic, and civic projects including Dilworth Park, a four-acre park and transit hub at Philadelphia’s City Hall, the Edgar N. Putman Event Pavilion at the James A. Michener Art Museum, and the Master Plan for the Central Delaware Waterfront in Philadelphia. Marilia has also led projects on some of the nation’s most treasured campuses, including Cornell University, Wellesley College, and Yale University. She was Principal-in-Charge of the East End Transformation, a vibrant and inviting gateway to Washington University in St. Louis. This major new campus landscape features LEED Platinum buildings, including an addition to the art and architecture school, an expansion of the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum, two new multiuse buildings, and an underground parking facility. Marilia is currently the Principal-in-Charge on the Heller Development at UC Santa Cruz and the Sackett Building Renovation and Addition at Penn State.

Marilia has a keen eye for creative solutions to design problems, resulting in projects that are as memorable as they are functional. She has applied her technical knowledge to create buildings that push the field of architecture forward, from modular assembly homes on sensitive sites to pavilions of self-supporting glass in the heart of the city.

Marilia has taught architecture at Philadelphia University and participated in lectures and juries at the University of Pennsylvania, the Pennsylvania State University, and the Catholic University of America. Her writing has been featured in the AIA Architectural Graphic Standards, 11th Edition and the National Institute of Building Sciences’s Journal of Building Information Modeling.

Cooper Schilling applies his technical expertise and construction experience to create cohesive, research-based building designs that bring meticulous detailing into well-crafted architecture.

With over 25 years of experience, Cooper brings extensive knowledge of academic and civic architecture, including high performance building systems and enclosures, material assemblies, and sustainable design.

Cooper led the exterior design and construction of New York University’s John A. Paulson Center, a 735,000 sf multi-purpose high-rise academic building. Cooper’s contributions to the building’s envelope included design and detail development of a projected curtain wall “wedge” unit that works at a variety of scales and functions. The wedges are strategically clustered in areas with high solar exposure, utilizing opaque panels that self-shade while maintaining an abundance of natural light and reducing solar gain and glare. The glass facade also includes a custom design frit pattern developed in close collaboration with the American Bird Conservancy to deter bird strikes. Cooper is currently leading the design and management of a new single-family residence in Reinholds, PA. He also leads the OpenHome design platform in collaboration with Bensonwood home builders.

Cooper enjoys sharing his technical and design knowledge of building systems integration, prototyping, and construction techniques to inform and advance KieranTimberlake’s design documentation and construction administration processes. He has served on juries at the University of Pennsylvania, Temple University, and Drexel University and has presented at the Northeast Sustainable Energy Association and the Environmental Design Research Association conferences.

Jason Smith is a practitioner, educator, and mentor who promotes the integrative potential of architecture.

In more than two decades leading architectural projects throughout North America, Jason Smith has evolved a wide-ranging and inclusive design process, resulting in a body of work that is collegial, artful, and spontaneous, while also esteemed for longevity and environmental responsiveness. He has led the design and construction of several award-winning projects, including Brockman Hall for Physics at Rice University and Pound Ridge House.

An advocate for collaboration, Jason has embraced novel project delivery paradigms—including at Brown University, where he spearheaded the design of one of the first university projects in the US to use a true Integrated Project Delivery platform for the Engineering Research Center. At the University of California, Santa Barbara, he collaborated with three partner firms to develop a shared vision for the San Joaquin Villages, a 1,000-person academic complex. He has worked with Rice University for over ten years, completing two building projects as well as a dynamic master plan for the entire campus that enables multiple planning scenarios to be modeled in real-time.

Jason’s approach to architecture integrates art, research, and new modes of project delivery, yielding sophisticated work that is both rich in meaning and beautiful in craft. His projects have been published in Architect, Architectural Record, and Faith and Form, and have been awarded internationally, including two Architecture Honor Awards from the American Institute of Architects. He has completed three LEED Platinum-rated projects and two LEED Gold-rated laboratory buildings, a high achievement for an energy-intense building type.

Jason has long fostered a comprehensive design culture and advanced an exemplary research mission at KieranTimberlake, which today invests in research staff and infrastructure devoted to improving the built environment. Jason’s commitment to the broadest spectrum of professional development includes creating and teaching an academic curriculum aimed at an urgent need of our industry—uniting design leadership with practice management. He is a frequent lecturer and serves on academic and professional design juries nationwide, including as a jury chair for AIA New England, AIA DC, and AIA Kansas. His participation in the Centennial Kossman thesis jury at his alma mater, Penn State University, led to the creation of an endowed scholarship fund for aspiring architects.

Ryan Welch is a Principal and Research Director at KieranTimberlake where he focuses on analysis, simulation, and performance modeling, primarily through the development of software tools. Specializing in building performance, Ryan’s projects include Roast™, a customizable thermal comfort survey application, as well as Pointelist™, a high-density wireless sensor network that provides real-time temperature and relative humidity measurements via a custom web application. Ryan was also the lead software, database, and user experience developer for Tally®, an LCA application that allows architects to calculate the environmental impact of building materials.

Previously, Ryan worked with Rice University to develop a custom interactive dashboard that enabled the university to study master planning scenarios. He also led the development of custom digital workflows for the US Embassy in London. He is currently a Co-Principal Investigator on an ARPA-E-funded research project into 3D-printed carbon-negative structures in collaboration with the University of Pennsylvania.

Ryan has taught architectural design at Cooper Union, Yale University, and Princeton University. He has also taught workshops with Billie Faircloth at Harvard University, the University of Minnesota, the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, and the University of Pennsylvania. Ryan has lectured across the country and overseas at SimBuild, the Design Modeling Symposium, and the Passive and Low Energy Architecture (PLEA) Conference.

Zinat Yusufzai, AIA, LEED AP, synthesizes complex environmental, technical, and aesthetic goals into cohesive and elegant spaces.

In over two decades with KieranTimberlake, Zinat has contributed to many of the firm’s most complex and award-winning projects. As an advocate for inclusivity in architecture, she believes design should reflect the full range of human experience, while celebrating exploration, experimentation, and fun. She embraces collaborative stakeholder engagement and thoughtful consideration of environmental impacts throughout the design process to yield successful programmatic, functional, and aesthetic outcomes. Her work reflects a deep sense of responsibility to use resources wisely and strategically, from environmental to financial.

Zinat has worked on many of the firm’s award-winning projects, including the River House Renewal at Harvard University, the Sculpture Building and School of Art Gallery at Yale University, and the John A. Paulson Center, a large, multi-purpose academic and residential building at New York University. She led a transformational master plan for the Rosenbach Museum & Library and campus-wide planning work for St. Paul’s School, guiding both a focused strategy for the school’s performing arts spaces and a comprehensive campus plan encompassing renovation, adaptive reuse, new construction, and campus-wide carbon reduction. Her other work includes the renewals of Morse and Ezra Stiles Colleges and Silliman College at Yale University, and a range of new academic and residential higher education projects across the country, including the Charles David Keeling Apartments at the University of California, San Diego.

Beyond her design work, Zinat is a dedicated mentor within the firm. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Religion from Oberlin College and a Master of Architecture from Virginia Tech.
