Stafford Little Hall
Princeton University

Princeton, New Jersey

Little Hall presented an opportunity for the joining of old world and new world interests. Despite then-modern amenities such as indoor plumbing, in the hundred years since its construction, uses and infrastructure have inevitably changed.

Stair and common area

Stair and common areaLittle Hall was the first dormitory at Princeton to have indoor plumbing. Despite this modern amenity, in the hundred years since its construction, uses and infrastructure have inevitably changed.

The University had ambitious goals: renovate all building systems, engage the campus to the west by opening up the ground floor to the adjacent site, provide common facilities and increase the bed count. The basement, previously considered unusable due to its proximity to the railroad (relocated in the 1920's) was seized upon as space instrumental to this project. When we first entered this part of the building, it felt like we were on an archaeological tour of Rome. The stone and brick arches are the foundation structure for the rest of the residence hall and created such a compelling space that we were reluctant to tear them out to fit in the new program. Instead, we made minor cuts where necessary and distinguished our action from the existing stonework with slate panels and steel. To give privacy to the student rooms without destroying the archway structure, we bricked them in. It was an excellent opportunity for the joining of old world and new world interests.
