Chestnut Hill College is housed in a spectacular grouping of Romanesque revival structures picturesquely assembled atop a ridge at the edge of Philadelphia. Seen both externally from across the approaching valley and internally from the cloistered walkways, the buildings convey the ordered tranquility of a convent.
Chestnut Hill College is housed in a spectacular grouping of Romanesque revival structures picturesquely assembled atop a ridge at the edge of Philadelphia. Seen both externally from across the approaching valley and internally from the cloistered walkways, the buildings convey the ordered tranquility of a convent.
Basements provide the only continuous internal linkage between the combined buildings and their sprawling wings. These basements had become the inadequate home over the years to a variety of new programs not anticipated in the 1920's. The core of this project reprogrammed the entire basement for contemporary student activity uses including a snack bar and food preparation space, a café that doubles for dances and small theatrical productions, a large screen TV lounge, game and student mail areas and a quiet study lounge. Also included is a library/computer center in the basement of St. Joseph Hall that adjoins these student activity spaces.
Lastly, we developed linkages to and renovated various recreational spaces including a new dance and aerobics room, new lockers and showers and renovations to an existing pool. In total, this basement complex not only internally links separate wings and buildings, but it affords students with a variety of means to relax, study and socialize ranging from snacking, TV and video, to recreation and a small library/computer center.
