The Walker Fine Arts Center was constructed in the late 1960s to house visual and performing arts departments for Woodberry Forest School, a boys' preparatory school in Virginia. By the early 1990s the building had become inadequate for the needs of the School, as identified in a campus master plan completed by our firm. Plans for a new addition and substantial renovation of the existing building were subsequently undertaken with construction completed in 2000.

The project creates new and renovated performance, studio and teaching spaces, while renewing the architectural character of the building. The completed project has resulted in a major transformation of the building. A new facade and new entrances face the main campus, welcoming students and visitors to an atrium gallery and lobby/reception space. New acoustically designed performance and practice spaces including a double-height recital hall; painting, drawing, printmaking and sculpture studios; and a fully renovated 500-seat auditorium with new theatrical systems form the core of the new spaces.
