KieranTimberlake to design new home for Institute for Sustainable Energy, Environment and Economy
[Philadelphia, PA - October 2006] - KieranTimberlake, an internationally acclaimed architecture firm, was selected to serve as Signature Architect for the Institute for Sustainable Energy, Environment and Economy (ISEEE) at the University of Calgary. The firm was chosen from a list of three firms which included Behnisch Architekten and Llewelyn Davies Yeang. The project is part of an ambitious program to develop a $1.5-billion capital expansion, which reinforces the vision and values of the University through innovative design. In a partnership model unique to Canada, KieranTimberlake Associates will collaborate with Canadian firms Cohos Evamy and Busby Perkins + Will to develop 42,000 gross square meters (452,000 gsf) of new space, committed to undergraduate and graduate teaching, research and dedicated support areas.
ISEEE was established in 2003 to provide leadership and coordination for developing and implementing energy and environment related initiatives at the University of Calgary. The building will provide academic and tenant spaces, labs, workshops and classrooms to support collaborative, team-based and mission oriented research, education and innovation. The architectural team will work with the University to create a distinctive, enduring landmark that meets or exceeds the highest sustainability goals and is the physical embodiment the University's academic plan.
"We hope that the making of ISEEE can form a blueprint for how the University might build from here on out," envisions James Timberlake. "We imagine a project that has a small carbon footprint, which employs performative architectural components and materials, which engages and returns significance to the landscape of the campus and the people who occupy it; a holistically designed project which is a significant architectural contributor to the region, the province, the city and the University for the next century and beyond."
The harvesting of oil reserves in Alberta's Athabasca region has brought great opportunity to the province and to the University. "Though they have a non-renewable resource that gives them great wealth at the moment, the University is smart to recognize the need to fund the development of sustainable technologies for the future." says David Riz, Associate-in-Charge.
Founded in 1984, KieranTimberlake is an award-winning and internationally published architecture firm noted for its research, innovation and inventive design. Through dedicated research initiatives, the firm has helped advance sustainability agendas at prominent educational institutions, including Yale University, Cornell University and Middlebury College. They created a Sustainability Guidelines Master Plan for Princeton University, and at the University of Pennsylvania's School of Engineering and Applied Science, the firm designed and installed an active curtainwall, the first of its type in the United States.
