This new gallery and studio art building extends Yale University's extraordinary arts
district one block west of Paul Rudolph's Art and Architecture Building and Louis Kahn's
Art Gallery and Mellon Center for British Art. During its first year, the new structure
will house the Yale School of Architecture while its own building is renovated and added
to by the firm Gwathmey Siegel. Following completion of renovations to the Art and
Architecture Building, the new structure will become the permanent home for Yale's world
renowned Sculpture Department.
This new gallery and studio art building extends Yale University's extraordinary arts
district one block west of Paul Rudolph's Art and Architecture Building and Louis Kahn's
Art Gallery and Mellon Center for British Art. During its first year, the new structure
will house the Yale School of Architecture while its own building is renovated and added
to by the firm Gwathmey Siegel. Following completion of renovations to the Art and
Architecture Building, the new structure will become the permanent home for Yale's world
renowned Sculpture Department.
The new complex has access from all four surrounding blocks. The four new mid-block
connections are landscaped and will extend the permanent and student gallery program into
the adjoining urban landscape beyond the new building. The site's street frontage is
anchored by a new 3,000 SF gallery that is clad in glass and a wood rain screen wall with
a green roof. A new urban passage adjoining the gallery from historic Edgewood Avenue
gives access to the 51,000 SF studio building. This four story glass structure is enclosed
by a high performance curtainwall that envelopes fourteen foot high studios on the upper
levels and shops and teaching space on the first floor. This studio building is conceived
as a mid-block lantern. An underground ramp joins the studio and gallery buildings. The
Howe Street frontage is defined by new ground level retail space with a four-story 280 car
garage above.
The building will employ a displacement ventilation system, in which air is introduced
at low velocities and at higher than usual supply temperatures for increased energy
efficiency and improved thermal comfort. To maintain a predominantly transparent
envelope, without compromising the building's high level of energy performance, a
curtainwall of triple glazing and insulating translucent spandrel panels has been combined
with an exterior sunshading system to reduce solar heat gain in the interior. This project is LEED Platinum.
